Layla Maurer

Attorney

Layla focuses her practice on building balanced, practical transactions for the creative, gaming, and technology industries. She supports clients ranging from indie devs to major publishers at each stage of licensing, development, and distribution. She particularly enjoys complex co-dev arrangements and privacy or policy work. 

Layla came to law from a career in IT and digital media and draws on that knowledge for her legal work. In her former role as in-house counsel, she supported publishing, digital, distribution, licensing, and privacy efforts and saw firsthand just how much goes into a single creative release.

Layla teaches transactional drafting and video game law at Case Western Reserve University School of Law. She regularly speaks to bar associations and continuing legal education audiences on these and other topics, including artificial intelligence in legal practice. In the real world she makes time for live industrial, alt, and (oddly) Broadway performances. She also sings in choirs and studies entirely too many languages. The intersection of systems, sorcery, and sound is her happy place whether in games or her latest book or anime series, particularly if she finds a well-placed cat at the crossroads.
